Another great Google Map tool is called CommunityWalk. It, among other things, allows you to put a marker on a specific location and add photos of that location. A student could place a marker at an historic location and add pictures of that location. Plus, CommunityWalk allows you to make a trail. It links locations and will let a viewer travel from location to location to view what's there.
I quickly make a trail from Memorial Intermediate to Schlitterbahn just to try it out. I hope to have the students do some research and make their own CommunityWalk using historic locations here in New Braunfels, so stay tuned!
