In a past science experiment, we had our students see what life was like without thumbs. Today, we gave back their thumbs, but, to add a new twist since we are studying the skeletal system, we took away the thumb's joints and had the kids perform a few tasks like roll and rubber band a newspaper, open and pour popcorn seeds from one container to another, cut a circle out of a note card and thumb tack it to the bulletin board, among other things.
